The Food Elves Plan a Party

“Hot dogs, potato chips, punch and cake. Did I forget anything?” asked Grant, chewing on the end of his pencil thoughtfully.

“That sounds great to me!” answered Robert, shifting around on the floor for a more comfortable position. “We haue been working on this party menu for an hour. Let’s not change it again.” He leaned over and looked at the page Grant had been working on. Popcorn was scratched out. “I do think we should have popcorn, though, that’s my favorite!”

“O.K. Popcorn. Andrew likes it, too, and it is his birthday party. I sure hope you can keep a secret so we can surprise him.”

“Me! You’re the one who told Dad about his surprise on Father’s Day!”

“I only told him once! And Father’s Day was a long way off. I thought he would forget by then. Besides, he said he was surprised.” Grant argued.

“Sure. Well keep Andrew’s party to yourself and let’s see if we can pull it off this time. Mom said it was all up to you and me and John. You can see how interested John is.” They both looked up from their floor work place, to John, who lay fast asleep on the bed.

Grant leaned against the bed and picked up the pad and pencil. “We’d better plan some games or something now that the menu is finished.”

“You call that a menu?” said a voice. “I can’t believe you two! Planning a two elf party!

“John?” said Robert softly. John was still asleep. Then he saw a little light on the pillow next to John’s face. The light hopped over to the foot of the bed next to Grant. And there stood a tiny elf. He had his hands on his hips and he was staring at them indignantly. “You can’t have a really successful party unless you invite all seven Food Elves!”

“We didn’t invite any elves. This is a birthday party for kids.” Grant surprised himself, by explaining to the elf. “I’ve never even heard of the Food Elves!”

“I’ll Just pretend I didn’t hear that.” the elf said .”I am Protein, the First Food Elf and you did invite me. I heard you.

I, Protein, will bring meat, poultry, fish, beans ,eggs or nuts. Let me suggest cubes of chicken in sauce.” Grant began to write. “Oh, I’ll give you the recipe later.” the elf told him. “But, first I’ll introduce the others. Even I can’t do a whole party alone. He pointed to a pair of tiny elves Just landing by his side. “Meet Fruits and Vegetables. They have wonderful things for parties.”

“Invite us to the party and we will bring beautiful platters of cold crisp vegies and colorful sweet fruits.” they smiled.

“With oranges! said Robert. “I love oranges with coconut.”

A sudden twinkle of light brought their attention to the floor in front of them where two pudgy white elves had arrived.

“These boys need help.” said Protein. They say they have never heard of the Basic Four Foods or the Seven Food Elves.”

“Unbelievable! They DO need help.” said the one in the pointed hat. “We’re the starches. I have starchy vegetables and non-citrus fruits like bananas. How about some potatoes in the sauce with your chicken.”

“Wonderful! Are you the Popcorn Elf, too?” asked Robert.

“You catch on fast.” said Forth Elf ” Sure! All corn foods.”

“Hot buttered Pop corn?” asked Grant.

“You need Elf seven. He’s Butter and Margerine. He couldn’t make it today. You’ll know him, though.” he whispered.”He’s so fat, we call him, Butterball. It reminds us not to use too much.”

“I go to more parties than anyone!” said the white elf in the bakers hat. “I’m grains and I bring the birthday cake! I also go to almost everyones breakfast and take cereal.” Suddenly he was interupted by a cream colored elf who had Just arrived and was bouncing around and showing off his muscles. He hopped from Proteins shoulders, down to Grant’s knee and back up to the bed, before announcing; “I am Milk and Cheese! I will bring ice cream to the Party! And cold milk to drink! It’s so good with cake.”

Then the six elves took hands and began to sing.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES, INVITE SEVEN ELVES, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK!

INVITE US FOR BREAKFAST FOR LUNCH AND FOR DINNER.

THAT’S THE WAY TO BE A WINNER. ALL SEVEN DAYS! ALL SEVEN ELVES!

THAT’S THE WAY TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES!

“Grant! Robert! What are you doing asleep on the floor?” It was John. Awake now and wondering how the party plans were doing. Robert sat up and rubbed his eyes. “We were just…?” He looked at Grant slumped asleep over the pad. John picked up the paper and began to read. “Chicken Teriyaki, Vegie plate, Orange coconut salad, there’s even a recipe! I didn’t think Grant could spell this many words! You two must have gotten help from Mom. He read the recipe silently. Umm, this sounds good.”

Grant woke up mumbling, “Take care of yourselves… invite., seven elves… What? Oh, John, We just talked to…”

“Yes, I see. You got Mom to help, but it seems simple enough. Let’s do it.”

Grant sat for a moment looking dazed. “Did you SEE anything?” he asked Robert. Robert looked around.

“You mean Protein, the Vegie Twins and those white ones?”

“Right! The Starches and Milk and Cheese. And the one that didn’t get here. The fat one.”

“Butterball! They WERE here!” said Grant.

“Take care of yourselves, invite seven elves.” they sang together. Grant reached up and took the papers from John. There it was and in his very own handwriting.
